To some people who see Dusty, they see his beautiful gold color and call him a palomino. Then to other, they see his dorsal strip and leg bars and ask "what the heck color is he, a red dun?" Well, it really just depends on the person and what you read or think. He is registered palomino. But what makes him such a good dilute color producer is the fact that he carries both the cream gene AND the dun gene. Okay, so what does this all mean? Well, dunalino can be up to 90% dilute color producers. Dusty is putting true palominos and buckskins on the ground (foals without dorsal strips), a long with dunalinos and dunskins (ugh! what names!!). And yes, he can still produce cremellos or perlinos when bred to a palomino or a buckskin, but it is said, that the chances of getting one is smaller. I have also found that is not that uncommon to get a grulla when crossing a dunalino to black based (i.e. bay, brown). So is a dunalino a new color? No. Skippa Ward is one of the more famous ones, but they just called him a palomino. As far as APHA or AQHA goes, it is not a color either. Now these two colt are from Dusty, one is registered palomino and one is registered red dun. Both have a dorsal strip. |
